English Children's Literature(Week Two)

9.24.2015
Week 2: Winnie-the-Pooh

1. IntroductionWinnie-the-Pooh, also called Pooh Bear, is a fictional anthropomorphic teddy bear created by A. A. Milne. The first collection of stories about the character was the book Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), and this was followed by The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Milne also included a poem about the bear in the children's verse book When We Were Very Young (1924) and many more in Now We Are Six (1927). All four volumes were illustrated by E. H. Shepard.

Kanga"- mother, "Roo"- son (Kangaroo)
(4) 易混单词, 如 "aker"(acer, acre, aker, akre), " hunny" (honey)

2. Characters
(1) Winnie-the-Pooh: His favorite food is hunny (a wrong spelling of "honey"). He often says “Oh, bother.” and “Think, think, think.”

(2)  Eeyore: A blue-gray donkey. His appearance is highlighted by a small light pink bow on his tail. Eeyore is a extremely gloomy donkey and afraid his tail falling off and his house falling down. He often says “Thanks for noticin’ me” and “Oh, well”. His favorite food is thistles.

(3) Tigger:  He is a very bouncy animal and resembles a tiger. He is always in an electrifying and exuberant mood and loves to bounce, bounce and bounce. His favorite food is the extract of malt

(4) Piglet: Piglet is a very brave animal as supposed to his diminutive size and frame of a timid pink pig. What he loves doing best is going on adventures with Pooh. Haycorns are his favourite food.

(5) Rabbit:  What he likes doing most is organizing a plan and to lead group events, even if nothing gets done. He is unhappy if anyone disturbs or interrupts him while he is engaged in any kind of activity, he doesn’t like being bounced either. He relishes gardening and his favourite food is the carrot and other vegetables.

(6) Kanga and Roo: Kanga is the sole female character in Winnie-the-Pooh. She is the mother of a baby kangaroo named Roo. Kanga carries her family in her pocket and is the fastest amongst all animals in the forest. She often says "Now now Roo, you mustn't do that dear," to which Roo mostly replies "But moma!" Roo is the youngest member of the 100 Acre Wood, he love milk and most other eateries expect for the extract of malt. (Kangaroo)

3. Onomatopoeia
(1) Onomatopoeia is a word that phonetically imitates, resembles or suggests the source of the sound that it describes.

          a. animal noises-- "oink", "miaow" (or "meow"), "roar" or "chirp".
          b. 由擬聲字形成的名詞: drip, drop, frog, rush, mumble (=murmur)

4. Nonsense
(1) Nonsense is a communication, via speech, writing, or any other symbolic system, that lacks any coherent meaning.
(2) Nonsense is synonymous with absurdity or the ridiculous
(3) Reasons range from pure comic amusement or satire, to illustrating a point about language or reasoning.
(4) Examples

          b. "Jabberwocky" (a nonsense poem written by Lewis Carroll)
(5) Lewis Carroll: He is an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem Jabberwocky, and the poem The Hunting of the Snark, all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. There are societies in many parts of the world dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life.

5. John Denver-- Today
Lyrics:

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine,

I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine.

A million tomorrow shall all pass away, 'ere I forget all the joy that is mine, today.

I'll be a dandy and I'll be a rover, you'll know who I am by the songs that I sing.

I'll feast at your table, I'll sleep in your clover, who cares what tomorrow shall bring?

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine,

I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine.

A million tomorrow shall all pass away, 'ere I forget all the joy that is mine, today.

I can't be contented with yesterday's glory, I can't live on promises winter to spring.

Today is my moment, now is my story, I'll laugh and I'll cry and I'll sing.

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine,

I'll taste your strawberries, I'll drink your sweet wine.

A million tomorrow shall all pass away, 'ere I forget all the joy that is mine, today.
